CHT is proud to offer a wide range of locomotives to fit almost every need and budget. From little garden gauge pot boiler locos to intricate near museum quality engines in the larger scales. If you're not really sure just what you are looking for, then read on:

Gauge vs Scale:
The locomotives on the following  pages are broken down into various "gauges", or the measured distance between the rails. This is different than the "scale" which is the size relationship to the prototype, this is expressed either as a fraction (ex: 1/12) or an equivalency (ex: 1"=1foot,  often just shortened to 1"), both given examples are the same size (sometimes called "dollhouse" scale), simply expressed differently. We break the engines down by gauge, rather than scale, for sake of simplicity. In modeling we may have many different scales of  locomotives sharing the same gauge of track. For instance in 7-1/2" GAUGE,  a 1-1/2" scale locomotive would be a model of a standard gauge prototype, a 2-1/2" scale locomotive would be an approximate model of a 3 foot  (or metre) gauge engine, and a 4" scale would be a 2 footer etc.
About our manufacturers:

Maxitrak Ltd.- This company has been on the market in their native UK for some time but is a relative newcomer to the US market. Maxitrak locomotives are priced to be a very good "starter" ride on scale live steam locomotive. Their standards of fit and finish are good, and result in a very sturdy good running engine. Their low price comes from the two sizes of engines sharing many common parts. This also makes replacement parts inexpensive as well. Maxitrak locomotives are also available in machined kits, and ready to run, but (to help spread out the expense) Maxitrak steam locomotive kits are also available as 4 sub-assemblies to help spread the cost. Maxitrak offers 9 live steam and 7 electric locomotives in 4-3/4"-5" and 7-1/4"-7-1/2" gauges. To add to their appeal, the larger size 7-1/2" ga engines are also available in the narrower 4-3/4"  gauge.

Mamod- a UK company that produces a neat little toylike tank engine 1 steam loco, available in several colors , machined kit or RTR and in Ga0 or 1

Still unsure? Perhaps these discriptions may help.

jump to 7-1/4 & 7-1/2
jump to 4 3/4  & 5"
jump to garden
 jump to Rolling Stock
Largest gauge we sell, and  the most popular size riding trains in the US.
Many east coast and European tracks are 7-1/4", while the rest of the US and much of Asia use 7-1/2".
A nice compromise gauge, and the most popular size in much of the world. 4-3/4"ga. is used in the US, and 5"ga. is used almost everywhere else.
Smaller sized locomotives for people who want to experience the fun of ride on Live Steam, but don't have all that much space.

Plus- garden scale locomotives for those who are ready to move up to live steam
